WHO WE ARE?
The San Mateo Self-Defense Club is a student-run community club for anyone who wants to build self confidence, sharpen awareness, and practice real-world self-defense skills.
We are a CSM student organization and open to all students, all skill levels.
Our weekly sessions combine:
- Light Stretch & Dynamic Warm-Up – accessible to every body type and fitness level.
- Strategy Workshops – peer-led discussions and scenario drills to develop critical thinking, de-escalation, and personal safety planning.
- Guided Meditation & Visualization – short mental rehearsals to lock in strategy and calm under pressure.
- Open-Mat Practice – learn and drill the same techniques covered in the CSM online self-defense course.
Whether you’re brand-new to martial arts or already training, the club provides a supportive space to learn, move, and grow with fellow Bulldogs.
Confidence is the first line of defense.
The San Mateo Self-Defense Club helps you cultivate it step by step:
- Situational Awareness & Strategy
- Learn to read your environment, identify exits, and anticipate risks.
- Practicing these habits in a supportive group makes calm decision-making second nature.
- Mind–Body Training
- Guided breathing, light warm-ups, and skill drills teach you to control adrenaline and stay centered under pressure.
- You’ll leave each session with the physical readiness and mental clarity to act when it counts.
- Progressive Skill Mastery
- Weekly open-mat sessions let you see measurable improvement—each new technique reinforces that you can protect yourself if needed.
- Small wins compound into lasting confidence you carry beyond the mat.
- Community Support
- Training alongside fellow students builds trust and accountability.
- Sharing scenarios and role-plays with peers creates the assurance that you’re not alone in keeping yourself safe.

Do I need to take the self-defense class to participate?
No. The club complements the official course, but you can join even if you’re not enrolled.
Is there a membership fee?
No. The club is free and funded through the Inter-Club Council (ICC). Voluntary donations for equipment or guest instructors are welcome.
What should I wear?
Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in. Something you would wear to the gym, a yoga session, or on a hike.
When and where do you meet?
Weekly on campus
exact day/time and location are TBA and will be on our Instagram and the CSM club calendar.
Will there be sparring?
The goal of this club is not for sparring. While light contact will happen when drilling techniques in slow controlled manner, the goal of this club is to learn about our bodies, minds, and how to apply that when it comes to self-defense.
Is this a replacement for professional training or campus security?
No. Our sessions are educational and meant to supplement, not replace, professional instruction or campus safety procedures.
